Biography

Andrew O’Connor is now in the fourth year of his Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the University of Western Australia. Versed in a wide variety of styles and genres, he sings roles ranging from the Renaissance and Baroque to Opera and Contemporary compositions.

He is a member of the West Australian Opera Company Chorus and in 2009 sang roles by Monteverdi, Handel, Rossini and Offenbach as part of a youth series with Simon Kenway (Opera Australia). For UWA he has sung scenes from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo; Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute; Britten’s Albert Herring and Sondheim’s Into the Woods; and performed the roles of Jupiter in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld and the title role in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He is a chorister and soloist for Dr Margaret Pride’s Collegium Musicum and was soloist in the Faure Requiem and Tippet’s Child of our Time for UWA and is due to appear as Papageno for the Perth Lyric Chorale; along with Don Alfonso and a new premiere work – Plains of Promise, by composer, Perry Joyce.

Equally at home on the stage and the the choral platform, he joined the National Youth Choir of Australia in 2007 for the West Australian tour. This elite choral experience, combined with his time with the West Australian Youth Chorale lead to work with Collegium Musicum, St George’s Cathedral Choir, and the IFSM Vocal Academy and So La Voce Chamber Choir in Brisbane, working and singing with Gabriel Crouch of the Kings’ Singers. Closer to home he has toured three times with the Winthrop Singers, who called Beijing home for the ISME conference in August 2010, and will record their second CD later in the same year. He sees these elite choral experiences as a chance to relish the joy in music making, learn new repertoire and enjoy the company of friends.
