The jazz big band would have to be known as one of the most versatile and aesthetically impressive entertainment ensembles. Since its first appearance in the dance halls of the late 1920s the big band has captured the hearts of countless generations through the music of greats including Duke Ellington and Count Basie as well as crooners including Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior and more recently Michael Buble. Its use in countless Hollywood movies with dancers throwing their partners around in various spins and turns whether in an elite club or common dance hall has helped give the big band a unique place in entertainment circles being able to be inclusive of a wide range of people.

York Soul and Jazz Festival October 2008
The St Thomas Big Band, directed by Simon Montgomery, is a full 18 piece jazz big band consisting of 5 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones. piano, guitar, bass and drums and featuring the vocal talents of James Sweeney and Ben Hall. James and Ben will entertain you and get the dance floor moving as they lead the St Thomas Big Band in performing their repertoire which includes hit tunes by Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra, songs synonymous with the swing era by the likes of Ellington and Basie’s big bands, hot latin jazz standards and classic and modern rock songs that have been specifically arranged for big band.
Formed in 2008, the St Thomas Big Band has performed at events across the Perth metropolitan area and at venues including Settlers House in York during the 2008 York Soul and Jazz Festival.
